Registration is now closed for my new course, Create Collections, starting Mon, Apr 29th.
Create a collection of cohesive, impactful artwork that impresses and engages art directors.
Learn how to use your unique taste to tell a visual story, solidify your style and increase the sales potential of your portfolio.
If you’re a commercial artist or designer, wanting to reach a broad range of clients with a strong body of work, then you know you need to think in terms of cohesive colours, subject matter and techniques - a style.
You’ve probably also heard that within that style, you need smaller groups of designs that focus on specific commercial themes - collections.
Think of it like this;
Style is the overarching story (the book).
Collections are the stories within the story (the chapters).
Here are some things you might not know;
Collections are not just for quilting fabrics - a portfolio of strong, cohesive collections impresses and engages art directors from all markets - and makes them want to buy into your artwork.
Collections of artwork create a stronger impact. Each design visually merchandises the next.
Working in collections makes you more prolific. You create more and think less, using valuable colours and concepts more than once.
Individual designs from collections can be sold to different clients. (You don’t have to turn clients away or create commissions. You can offer a similar alternative.)
A collection can be sold as a whole, to a single client - for a range of products.
A portfolio of collections that address key commercial themes appeals to a broader range of clients.
By focusing on cohesion and story, every time you create a collection, you will solidify your style!
Even though the reasons are clear, the path to successfully creating a collection can be confusing. Maybe you’ve tried, but you’re doubtful throughout the process and hazy about certain things;
Which motifs can be repeated and which can’t.
How do you keep the colours cohesive?
Why do your designs all look the same - or why do they look like five different people created them?
Should you be following a formula?
How many placements and how many patterns do you need?
How many designs should there be in a collection?
